Visit Stirling – Our City
Situated in Scotland’s heart, Stirling is often considered the gateway to The Highlands and is the perfect springboard for visiting Scotland’s two busiest cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Modern Stirling boasts stunning walks, tourist hotspots and beautiful architecture. But it is its rich and bloody history that truly stirs the soul. We’ve been lucky to use this as the influence for our Folklore Collection.
Mary Queen of Scots spent much of her life within the castle walls and she was even crowned in the Royal Chapel. While her fate would be ugly, the 8th Earl of Douglas was actually murdered in the castle grounds. His body thrown from the battlement walls.
Stirling Castle is one of the few that has not been constantly occupied throughout the years. In 1296 when Edward invaded Scotland during the Wars of Independence he found Stirling Castle completely abandoned to the elements.
One of the best known Scottish battles occurred at Bannockburn where King Robert the Bruce regained control of the castle and the surrounding countryside. But it is The Battle of Stirling Bridge where William Wallace defeated the English forces that lives on in Scottish hearts. The Wallace Monument in Bridge of Allan stands as a testament to Wallace’s determination and courage. The monument sees tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.
Scotland is known to have produced many of the world’s cleverest inventions including the television, bicycles, the refrigerator and penicillin. What many people don’t know is that the very first attempt at human flight took place in Stirling. In 1507 Italian alchemist John Damian strapped on feather wings and threw himself from the castle battlements. Unsurprisingly, he failed spectacularly and ended up in a dunghill with a broken leg.
