Meet Our Head Distillery Here At Stirling Distillery
Laura Barber is our new head distiller who began her journey with us just as lockdown began. It was an unusual start as her first few months were spent making hand sanitiser for the front line and local services. Now months on, Laura has been incredibly busy making gin and experimenting with new botanicals and flavours.
We asked Laura a few questions about herself:
Where are you from and what is your background?
I’m from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Before moving to Scotland, I studied biology with a focus in chemistry. During my Uni days is where I developed my interest in alcoholic beverages.
Where did you study?
I got my MSc in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.
Why did you decide to study distilling?
I wanted a career that was both creative and scientific. Distilling allows me to apply my scientific knowledge with my passion to create.
What are your interests/hobbies?
I like old lady activities like gardening and crocheting. I also like to travel and now that I live in Europe I love going to visit new places, and eat new foods.
Any interesting facts about you?
I can’t think of any interesting facts so I’m just going to list things about me for you: my favourite colour is purple, I prefer cats, Autumn is my favourite season and I love a spicy bloody Mary.
What does a day in the life of a distiller look like?
A normal day starts with preparing and starting the day’s distillation. Drink coffee. Check on the distillation, do some bottling, maybe run an experiment. Drink more coffee. Talk visitors ears off about the science behind distilling. Coffee.
What new products are you working on ?
During lockdown I was working on distilling our latest product ‘Tropical Triumph.’ It was a lot of fun to create and we were thrilled with how popular it was. Now I am in the process of creating a pink gin which is exciting as we don’t have one in our core range. In the background we are also in the process of buying casks and starting to produce our own whisky. It is a brand new adventure for us and it will be great to add whisky to our range of products.
